Oral Hyaluronic Acid

In brief

What it is: A dietary hyaluronic acid supplement — a polysaccharide your body already makes — taken to hydrate skin from within.

Key benefits: Improves skin hydration; may support elasticity, wrinkle depth and barrier function.

Best for: Dry or dehydrated skin seeking hydration from within.

How we use it: A dietary supplement that supports skin from within — complements our in-studio facials.

Sodium hyaluronate · hyaluronan

Does oral hyaluronic acid work for skin? On current evidence, yes for hydration: tracer studies show roughly 90% is absorbed and reaches the skin, and randomised trials at 60–200 mg daily found measurably better hydration within 2–8 weeks, with elasticity and wrinkle-depth gains at 12 weeks. It is the less-hyped, better-supported cousin of collagen peptides — and one of the few beauty supplements with absorption data. It still does not replace SPF, water or a professional facial.

The obvious objection

Hyaluronic acid is a very large molecule. The sensible reaction to a hyaluronic acid capsule is that your gut will simply break it apart, and nothing meaningful will reach your face.

It is a good objection. It is also the one part of this story that has been directly tested.

Where it actually goes

Researchers have tracked oral hyaluronic acid using radiolabelled molecules — tagging the compound so its path through the body can be followed.

Using carbon-14 labelling, roughly 90% was absorbed from the digestive tract. More strikingly, hyaluronic acid concentration in the skin was higher than in the blood at both 24 and 96 hours after a dose — it was not merely circulating, it was accumulating where you would want it.

A separate study using technetium-labelled high-molecular-weight HA found radioactivity incorporated into skin and joint tissue within fifteen minutes, persisting for 48 hours.

The absorption route is unusual: high-molecular-weight hyaluronan largely survives gastric fluid and is taken up by intestinal cells via TLR-4 receptors, then distributed through lymphatic tissue and the bloodstream. Lower-molecular-weight forms are absorbed further along, in the caecum.

Does oral hyaluronic acid actually work for skin? What the trials show

  • A 2025 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 150 healthy adults, conducted to SPIRIT guidelines over 12 weeks, tested sodium hyaluronate at 60 mg and 120 mg daily. It reported improvements across hydration, water loss through the skin, sebum, elasticity, wrinkle depth, epidermal thickness and dermal density. Notably, the lower 60 mg dose — not previously tested — also worked.
  • A double-blind trial of 129 women found hydration significantly improved between 2 and 8 weeks in both younger and older participants, skin tone improved at 4–8 weeks, and epidermal thickness increased by 12 weeks.
  • A 2025 meta-analysis of seven randomised trials found significant improvements in hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth.

Compare that with the collagen peptide picture on the previous page, where independent trials showed no effect. Oral hyaluronic acid is the less-hyped of the two and, on current evidence, the better supported.

Limitations worth knowing

The 2025 authors were candid about the field's weaknesses, and we will repeat them rather than skip past.

Most prior studies were conducted in Asian cohorts, which limits how far the findings generalise. Only one trial had evaluated Caucasian participants exclusively before theirs.

Several older studies were published only in Japanese, or lacked detailed statistical analysis, making independent evaluation harder.

And as with almost every supplement, much of the research is conducted by or for companies selling the ingredient. That does not invalidate it — but after the collagen findings, it is a question worth asking of any beauty supplement.

Our reading: hydration is well supported. The structural claims — elasticity, epidermal thickness — are promising but based on fewer, smaller studies.

How to use it

Trial doses ranged from 60 to 200 mg daily, with 12 weeks the typical duration and hydration effects appearing from around two weeks. Both high and low molecular weight forms have been studied, and both appear to be absorbed by different routes.

Oral and topical hyaluronic acid do different jobs. Applied to skin, it holds water at the surface — and in dry air it can actually pull moisture out of skin unless you seal it with something on top. Taken orally, it appears to supplement the skin's own hyaluronan from within. Neither replaces the other, and neither replaces drinking water.

In Florida's humidity, topical HA behaves well — there is moisture in the air for it to hold. That is one of the few skincare advantages of this climate. See our guide to lightweight routines for humid climates.

How this shows up at Lumina

Oral hyaluronic acid supports hydration from the inside; in the studio we work the outside. The 30-minute Express Hydrating Facial ($75, no downtime) polishes first, then delivers a hyaluronic surge and seals it in, and the Galvanic Current add-on ($35) helps carry hydrating actives deeper. Frequently asked questions

Does oral hyaluronic acid actually reach the skin?

Tracer studies suggest it does. Using radiolabelled molecules, researchers found roughly 90% was absorbed from the digestive tract, and hyaluronic acid concentration in the skin was higher than in the blood at both 24 and 96 hours after a dose. It is one of the few beauty supplements with this kind of absorption evidence.

What dose was used in the studies?

Trial doses ranged from 60 to 200 mg daily, typically for about 12 weeks, with hydration effects often appearing from around two weeks. Both high and low molecular weight forms have been studied and appear to be absorbed by different routes. This is general education, not a dosing recommendation.

How long does oral hyaluronic acid take to work?

In trials, skin hydration improvements were commonly seen between two and eight weeks, while structural measures such as epidermal thickness took around 12 weeks. Results vary between individuals.

Is oral or topical hyaluronic acid better?

They do different jobs. Applied to skin, hyaluronic acid holds water at the surface, and in dry air it can pull moisture out of skin unless you seal it with a moisturizer on top. Taken orally, it appears to supplement the skin's own hyaluronan from within. Neither replaces the other, and neither replaces drinking water.

Does Lumina sell hyaluronic acid supplements?

No. Lumina Skin Sanctuary is a licensed esthetician studio, not a medical or supplement provider, and this page is general education rather than medical advice. We focus on in-studio hydration facials and begin every visit with a skin assessment to determine whether your skin is dry, dehydrated, or both.
