How to Reduce Under-Eye Puffiness in Fort Myers' Heat and Allergy Season
David Pipes By David Pipes · Co-OwnerShare
If you live anywhere from Fort Myers to Cape Coral, Estero, or Bonita Springs, you know the feeling: you wake up, glance in the mirror, and your eyes look swollen, shadowed, and tired before the day has started. Under-eye puffiness is one of the most common concerns I hear about in my studio, and here in Southwest Florida it has a few specific culprits. Our heat, our marathon allergy seasons, and the constant swing between humid outdoor air and cranked-up AC all conspire to make the delicate skin around your eyes retain fluid. The good news: most morning puffiness is manageable once you understand what is happening.

What Actually Causes Under-Eye Puffiness
The skin under your eyes is the thinnest on your entire body, and there are no oil glands and very little structural support to hold everything in place. That makes it the first place fluid pools and the last place it drains. Most under-eye puffiness comes down to a handful of overlapping factors:
- Fluid retention. When lymphatic drainage slows overnight, fluid settles in the loose tissue under your eyes. This is why puffiness is almost always worst in the morning and eases as you move around during the day.
- Salt and diet. A salty dinner, alcohol, or a poor night's hydration pulls water into the tissues. Coastal living means a lot of us eat out, eat late, and eat salty, and it shows up under the eyes by morning.
- Sleep position and quality. Sleeping flat or face-down lets fluid collect. Short or broken sleep also raises cortisol, which encourages your body to hold onto water.
- Allergies and histamine. Allergic inflammation dilates blood vessels and leaks fluid into surrounding tissue, which is why allergy flares create that puffy, itchy, shadowed look almost overnight.
- Heat. When you are warm, blood vessels dilate to shed heat. Dilated vessels mean more fluid seeping into thin under-eye skin, plus more visible bluish shadowing.
- Age and genetics. Over time the little fat pads that cushion the eye can bulge forward and the skin thins. This structural puffiness is different from fluid puffiness and responds less to at-home tricks.
Why Southwest Florida Makes It Worse
Fort Myers gives us two overlapping puffiness triggers that many other parts of the country do not deal with at the same intensity. The first is our allergy calendar, which barely quits. Instead of one spring pollen season, we get oak and pine in late winter and early spring, a long grass-pollen stretch through the warm months, and ragweed in the fall, with mold spores riding high year-round thanks to our humidity. For a lot of my clients, allergic puffiness is not a two-week event; it is a background hum most of the year.
The second is heat and humidity. Our summers keep your blood vessels dilated and your body working to stay cool. Then you step indoors into aggressive air conditioning that pulls moisture out of your skin, so the surface dehydrates even while fluid pools underneath. Add year-round UV that thins delicate eye-area skin over time, plus coastal salt air, and you have a perfect environment for puffiness to become a daily pattern.
Morning De-Puff Techniques That Actually Work
The fastest wins are about moving fluid out of the area. These take five minutes and genuinely help:
- Cold, first thing. Cold constricts blood vessels and calms fluid leakage. Keep two metal spoons or a gel eye mask in the fridge and rest them over closed eyes for two to three minutes. Chilled cucumber slices work for the same reason, plus a little soothing hydration.
- Gentle lymphatic strokes. Using your ring finger (it presses the lightest), sweep from the inner corner of the eye outward toward the temple, then continue down toward the top of the ear and jaw. Feather-light pressure, five to ten passes per side. You are nudging fluid toward the lymph nodes, not scrubbing skin.
- Elevate overnight. Add a second pillow so your head sits above your heart. Gravity drains the area while you sleep, and you wake up less swollen.
- Hydrate and move. A big glass of water and a few minutes of walking get your circulation and lymph flowing, which is exactly what stalled overnight.
Targeted Products for the Eye Area
The eye area rewards a light touch. Rich, heavy creams can actually make puffiness look worse by weighing down skin that already drains poorly. Look for a few specific ingredients:
- Caffeine for temporary de-puffing and to brighten shadowing.
- Peptides to support the thin skin and firmness over time.
- Low-strength hyaluronic acid for lightweight hydration that plumps crepiness without heaviness, which matters a lot in our AC-dried climate.
- A gentle antioxidant like vitamin C or niacinamide to defend against year-round UV and help even tone.
Apply eye product morning and night with your ring finger, tapping rather than dragging. If you use a retinol or eye retinoid, introduce it slowly, only at night, and pair it with sunscreen the next day. And never skip SPF around the eyes, because chronic sun exposure is one of the biggest reasons under-eye skin thins and puffiness becomes permanent.
Lifestyle Fixes That Address the Root Cause
At-home tricks treat the symptom. These habits reduce how often puffiness shows up at all:
- Cut the evening salt. Watch late dinners, restaurant meals, and salty snacks. After a salty night, drink extra water, because dehydration makes retention worse, not better.
- Manage allergies proactively. Talk to your doctor about a daily antihistamine or nasal spray during our long pollen and mold seasons instead of reacting after a flare. Saline rinses and a bedroom air purifier cut overnight allergen exposure.
- Protect your sleep. Seven to eight hours, consistent timing, head slightly elevated. This single change helps more people than any product.
- Do not rub. Allergy itch makes you rub, and rubbing inflames and darkens the area and breaks down that fragile skin. Cold compress the itch instead.
- Limit evening alcohol. It dehydrates and dilates vessels, a bad combination for morning eyes.
When a Professional Facial or Lymphatic Massage Helps
If you have tried the home routine and your under-eye area still feels chronically puffy, a professional treatment can reset things in a way home care cannot. In my studio, manual lymphatic drainage is one of the most satisfying things I do, because clients see the difference in one session. Using precise, gentle strokes, I guide trapped fluid out of the eye area and down through the lymphatic pathways of the face and neck. It de-puffs, brightens, and relaxes the whole face.
For the eye area specifically, the Express Eye & Lip Facial targets puffiness, dark shadowing, and fine lines around the eyes and mouth, while the Express Gua Sha Facial uses lymphatic-draining gua sha strokes to move fluid and de-puff the whole face. Both are quick, no-downtime express treatments. For fuller sculpting and manual massage, the Manual Facial Lift & Sculpt is especially good for fluid retention and a tired, heavy look, while a hydrating treatment like the Lumina Radiance Facial rebuilds the moisture that our AC and salt air strip away. If you are not sure where to start, the Signature Glow Facial (from $60) is the best first visit, so I can assess your skin and build a plan around your specific puffiness pattern. You can see the full menu on my treatment menu. Because this is a private, one-on-one studio, every session is unhurried and tailored to you, never rushed like a busy med spa.
One honest caveat: if your puffiness is structural (bulging fat pads from age rather than fluid), lymphatic work softens the look but will not eliminate it, and permanent correction is a medical procedure best discussed with a licensed provider. Results from facials are cosmetic and temporary. I will always tell you which type of puffiness I am seeing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my under-eyes always puffiest in the morning?
Overnight, your lymphatic system slows and lying flat lets fluid pool in the thin tissue under your eyes. As you get up, move, and hydrate, that fluid drains and the puffiness eases through the morning. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated and a quick cold compress speed the process along.
Can Fort Myers allergies really cause eye puffiness?
Absolutely. Allergic inflammation releases histamine, which leaks fluid into the tissue around your eyes and creates that puffy, itchy, shadowed look. Because Southwest Florida has overlapping pollen seasons and year-round mold from our humidity, allergic puffiness here is often a season-long pattern rather than an occasional event. Managing allergies proactively makes a real difference.
Do caffeine eye products actually work?
For temporary de-puffing, yes. Caffeine constricts blood vessels and reduces the appearance of swelling and shadowing for several hours. Keep the product in the fridge so you get a cooling effect too. It will not fix structural puffiness or replace good sleep and hydration, but as a morning quick fix it earns its place.
Are cold spoons or cucumber better than an eye cream?
They do different jobs. Cold spoons and cucumber give instant vessel-constricting relief, while a good eye product delivers caffeine, peptides, and hydration that support the skin over time. Use both: cold for the fast morning de-puff, and a lightweight eye product morning and night for lasting results.
How often should I get a lymphatic facial for puffiness?
For a stubborn pattern, starting with a session every two to four weeks lets us make real progress, then most clients maintain with a treatment every four to six weeks. During heavy allergy or peak summer months, some of my Fort Myers clients come a little more often. I will recommend a rhythm based on what I see in your skin.
